Khiva's final coinage came under extraordinary duress. The emirate had functioned as a Russian protectorate since 1873, but the collapse of tsarist authority after 1917 left the khan's government briefly exposed — and briefly autonomous. Sayyid Abdullah Khan and his minister Junaid Khan, who held the real power by this point, issued these pieces amid active Bolshevik military pressure. The Red Army took Khiva in February 1920, abolishing the khanate entirely and establishing the Khorezm People's Soviet Republic.
These bronzes are among the last coins struck by any Central Asian khanate under traditional rule.
