| Reverse description | A dynamic male track athlete in full sprint is depicted in high relief at centre, his body angled forward with arms and legs in motion, set against stylised radiating track lanes converging toward the upper right. An outline map of the Samoa Islands is shown in the lower right field, inscribed with the legend SAMOA ISLANDS. The upper field bears the curved legend OLYMPIC GAMES 2008, and the date 2008 appears in the lower exergue. A beaded inner border frames the entire design. |

| Additional information |
Tanumafili II, who served as Samoa's head of state from independence in 1962, died in May 2008 — just months before these coins entered circulation. He never saw the Beijing Games they commemorate. The issue thus carries an unintended valedictory quality, bearing his name against an event he did not live to witness.
