| Opis awersu | This half-circle flan forms one half of a two-part commemorative issue, designed to be combined with the companion Kiribati KM#25 piece to create a complete round coin. The obverse displays the Samoan national coat of arms at centre, surrounded by horizontal wave-pattern lines filling the field. The date range '1997 • 2000' is inscribed along the straight diameter edge at top, while the legend 'SAMOA' and the denomination '$5' appear along the curved edge at bottom. The overall design is executed in proof finish, giving the fields a deeply mirrored appearance. |

Tanumafili II held the position of O le Ao o le Malo — head of state of Samoa — from independence in 1962 until his death in 2007, making him one of the longest-serving heads of state in the world at the time. He was also the longest-lived adherent of the Bahá'í Faith to hold national leadership, having converted in 1968. The 1997 issue falls squarely within a period when Samoa was producing small silver commemoratives largely for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation.
