Hemp — *Cannabis sativa* — occupies a complicated place in Pacific island policy, but Samoa's decision to issue this coin in 2017 was purely commercial: the sovereign mint novelty market rewards unusual shapes and plant-themed bullion, and the three-dimensional leaf architecture here was executed using smartminting® technology developed by the Czech Mint's partner B.H. Mayer. The coin is legal tender denominated in Samoan tala but was never intended for circulation.
