Tokelau, a non-self-governing territory administered by New Zealand, issued this piece as part of a broader commemorative program marking the Portuguese Age of Discovery — specifically the navigational routes that passed through and mapped the Pacific. Portugal's charting of the Pacific basin in the 16th century established the geographic framework later colonial powers inherited wholesale.
The escudo denomination reference is the telling detail: Portugal retired the escudo on January 1, 2002, when it joined the eurozone. This coin was struck the same year, making the tribute effectively an epitaph.
