Obverse description Crowned coat of arms of the city of Amsterdam centered in the field, flanking the date 1578 and the denomination expressed in Roman numerals (V S). The arms are rendered in a simple, forceful style characteristic of siege coinage struck under emergency conditions. The design elements are positioned to fill the square klippe flan, with the crown above the shield and the date and value distributed to either side.

Reverse description Plain, unadorned field with no devices, legends, or inscriptions of any kind. The surface of the square klippe flan shows the characteristic texture of a hammered emergency issue, with visible file marks and irregular surface consistent with hastily prepared siege coinage. The absence of a reverse design is deliberate and typical of this series of Amsterdam obsidional issues.
