Amsterdam began issuing its own silver coinage in 1578, the same year the city underwent its dramatic political and religious reversal — the Alteratie — switching allegiance from the Spanish Crown to the rebel States of Holland without a shot fired. The municipal mint's early output from this period is irregular in both weight and fabric, reflecting hasty establishment of local striking capacity during active wartime conditions.
HPM references for Amsterdam municipal issues from this decade are sparsely documented; die studies remain incomplete.
