Gibraltar's Crown dependency status gives it the legal authority to issue its own coinage, and the territory has used that latitude aggressively since the 1970s to produce collector-focused gold issues largely disconnected from general circulation. This piece was issued in 2020 to mark the 70th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip — the title "Strength and Stay" drawn from a phrase used by the Archbishop of Canterbury in his 1997 address at their Golden Wedding, himself quoting a Victorian hymn.
The five-sovereign format, at five times the gold weight of a standard sovereign, has no minting precedent in British Royal Mint tradition and exists purely within the commemorative market.
