Gibraltar's coin program has long operated as a commercial venture more than a monetary one, issuing high-face-value legal tender pieces aimed squarely at the collector market. The "Lest We Forget" series trades on the centenary commemorations surrounding the First World War, a conflict in which Gibraltar functioned primarily as a naval coaling station and garrison rather than an active theater — a fact that gives the patriotic framing here a somewhat oblique connection to events being memorialized.
Struck in 22-carat gold at just under 40 grams, this is essentially a five-sovereign weight piece, a denomination with no organic circulation history in Gibraltar.
