| 背面描述 | The classic reverse design by Benedetto Pistrucci, first introduced in 1817, depicts St. George on horseback to the right, in the act of slaying the dragon with a broken lance, the dragon shown writhing beneath the horse's hooves. St. George is shown nude save for a flowing cloak, in the heroic classical tradition. The exergue bears the engraver's name PISTRUCCI and the date 2023, separated by a raised line. The composition fills the reverse field with vigorous movement and is one of the most celebrated coin reverse designs in British numismatic history. |

Struck to mark Charles III's coronation on 6 May 2023 — the first coronation coinage from the Royal Mint in seventy years, the previous occasion being Elizabeth II's in 1953. The five-sovereign denomination itself has no continuous minting history; it is essentially a prestige bullion vehicle revived periodically for commemorative purposes rather than any functional monetary role.
The obverse portrait by Martin Jennings was the first new sovereign effigy in seven decades, and notably faces left — breaking the longstanding tradition of alternating direction with each successive monarch.
