The 535-year figure traces back to 1489, when Henry VII commissioned the first English gold sovereign — a denomination conceived explicitly to project royal authority in the aftermath of the Wars of the Roses. Gibraltar's involvement is purely jurisdictional; as a British Overseas Territory it holds the legal right to issue coinage under the Crown, a status that has generated an enormous volume of commemorative issues over the past three decades.
Henry VII's original sovereign was struck at a face value of 20 shillings, making it the highest-denomination English coin to that point.
