Catalonia's brief experiment with French suzerainty began in January 1641, when the Generalitat formally renounced allegiance to Philip IV and placed the principality under the protection of Louis XIII. These coins were struck at Barcelona during that precarious window — after the Catalan Republic's proclamation and before the steady reassertion of Castilian control that would follow Louis XIII's death in 1643 and the eventual fall of Barcelona to Philip IV's forces in 1652.
The issue is a direct product of political desperation: Catalonia needed a credible currency to legitimize the new allegiance and fund continued resistance against Habsburg armies. Eleven years of siege and attrition followed before the principality capitulated.
