Opmerkingen

The somoni replaced the Tajik ruble in 2000 at a rate of 1,000 to 1, a redenomination made necessary by the catastrophic inflation that followed both the Soviet collapse and the civil war that consumed the country from 1992 to 1997. The 5 somoni sits at the low end of the original series, which was introduced simultaneously with the currency reform rather than phased in — an unusual clean-break approach for a post-Soviet state still dependent on Russian monetary infrastructure.

The series was printed by De La Rue. Security provision on lower denominations of this period was minimal by regional standards — watermark and thread only, with no optically variable elements.
