| 背面描述 | The denomination is boldly stated in two lines at the centre of the field: the numeral 5 above the word SOLS in large incuse or raised lettering, with small six-pointed floral or star ornaments flanking the numeral and placed below SOLS as decorative punctuation. The circular legend MONOYE DE SIEGE DE MAYENCE runs around the entire periphery, separated from the central design by a toothed border, identifying this piece as siege coinage struck at Mainz. |

Mainz fell under French Revolutionary siege in the spring of 1793, after the short-lived Mainz Republic — the first republic on German soil — collapsed and Prussian and Austrian forces moved to retake the city. Trapped inside, the French garrison under General Kléber found itself cut off from regular supply and coinage. The city struck emergency copper pieces from whatever metal was available, the weight and module varying considerably across the run.
The siege lasted from April to July 1793. French forces surrendered on July 23rd.
