Peru's sol coinage collapsed under the weight of one of Latin America's most destructive inflation spirals. By 1985, the cumulative devaluation had become so extreme that the entire sol system was replaced by the inti at a rate of 1,000 to one — meaning this denomination, worth five soles, was functionally worthless within two years of its last minting date.
The brass composition reflects mid-series cost-cutting as metal procurement costs outpaced face value.
