Obverse description The obverse carries the bold central inscription CINCO SOLES on a fine guilloche underprint, flanked by two intaglio allegorical vignettes: a seated female figure to the left and a classical standing figure with attributes to the right. The header reads La República del Perú with the place and date Lima, Junio 30 de 1879, and serial numbers appear at both upper corners. A circular supervisory handstamp dated 1881 is impressed at the lower left, and a manuscript signature appears across the lower centre.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in pale red-brown on plain paper, centred on a large numeral 5 set within an elaborate lathe-work guilloche border of interlocking geometric bands. The inscription LA REPÚBLICA at the top and DEL PERÚ at the bottom frame the design, with a small ornamental vignette at the centre of the guilloche field and a Roman numeral V at the lower right.
