| Obverse description | Bare-headed bust of Napoleon I facing right, rendered in the neoclassical style, with short curly hair and a strong, idealized profile. The circular legend NAPOLEONE IMPERATORE E RE arcs around the upper periphery, interrupted by the truncation of the bust at the lower field. The date appears in the exergue below the bust truncation. A fine inner border of beading frames the design. |

| Additional information |
The Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy was a client state in every practical sense — its coinage policy dictated from Paris, its monetary system a direct extension of the French franc. The 5 Soldi occupied the lowest silver denomination in that system, valued at one-quarter of a Lira. Milan's mint handled production throughout the kingdom's existence, which ended abruptly with Napoleon's abdication in April 1814 and the subsequent Austrian restoration.
Issues from 1814 are notably scarcer, production having collapsed in the final months before Austrian forces entered Milan.
