Obverse description Left-facing bare-headed portrait bust of Thomas François Burgers, President of the South African Republic, with flowing hair and a full beard, rendered in high relief. The portrait is centrally positioned within a beaded border. The legend THOMAS FRANÇOIS BURGERS arcs around the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, while the date 1874. appears in the lower exergual area below the truncation. The engraving, executed by Leonard Charles Wyon of the Royal Mint, displays fine classical detailing characteristic of mid-Victorian medallic art.
