| Obverse description | Left-hand counterfoil printed in blue with administrative text and a circular cancellation stamp dated 15 JUN 1964. The main order carries a central vignette of Queen Elizabeth II in left-facing profile within a crowned laurel cartouche above the legend POUNDAGE / THREE PENCE. British postal orders were printed centrally by the UK and shipped to Commonwealth territories for local use, with the issuing post office's name overprinted before distribution. New Zealand's arrangement with the British Post Office meant that standard GPO-issue postal orders were adapted for domestic circulation rather than produced independently — a practical arrangement that persisted well into the 1960s. The 5 shilling denomination placed this squarely in everyday transactional use: bill payments, mail-order purchases, small remittances.
New Zealand decimalized on 10 July 1967, rendering shilling-denominated postal orders obsolete almost immediately. Issues from 1964 had a short working life.
