The Mercantile Bank of India, London & China was incorporated by royal charter in 1853 as a direct product of British imperial commercial expansion — one of the so-called "exchange banks" designed to finance trade flows between Britain, India, and the Far East rather than serve retail depositors. Notes of this denomination in this series are among the earliest paper issued under the bank's original charter name, before it was shortened following reorganization in 1876.
Batho & Bingley operated as a specialist security printer in London through several partnerships and name changes across the mid-Victorian period, which is why the same firm appears under at least three distinct imprints across this issue's lifespan. That succession of trade names can make accurate attribution of individual specimens difficult without examining the specific imprint line.
