Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has functioned as a self-governing state ever since, yet remains unrecognized by any United Nations member. Its coinage circulates domestically and serves a practical transactional function, but these pieces attract collectors primarily through their animal series — the sulfur-crested cockatoo depicted here being native to Australia and New Guinea, entirely absent from the Horn of Africa.
