| Obverse description | The obverse displays the national arms of Somaliland at centre: a shield bearing an eagle with outstretched wings surmounted by scales of justice, flanked by two olive branches and with clasped hands at the base. The circular legend 'REPUBLIC OF SOMALILAND' arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination '5 SHILLINGS' appears along the lower periphery. The date '2020' is divided on either side of the wreath at the lower field. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has functioned as a self-governing state ever since, yet remains unrecognized by any United Nations member. Its coinage circulates domestically and serves a practical transactional function, but these pieces attract collectors primarily through their animal series — the sulfur-crested cockatoo depicted here being native to Australia and New Guinea, entirely absent from the Horn of Africa.
