Comments

Green Point Track, on the Cape Flats outside Cape Town, held Boer prisoners captured during the early phase of the Anglo-Boer War. The camp operated its own canteen system, and these scrip notes were the mechanism for controlling purchasing within it — prisoners received credit rather than cash, spending it only within camp boundaries. Barnes served as canteen superintendent, and his signature was the sole authorization these notes carried.

P.O.W. canteen issues from this conflict are among the rarest South African paper money. Most were redeemed and destroyed at the close of hostilities, and surviving examples almost never surface with documentation tracing their original holder.
