Obverse description An intaglio portrait vignette of King George VI in left-facing profile is set within an oval guilloche frame at the lower left. The issuer title 'THE EAST AFRICAN CURRENCY BOARD' appears in bold lettering across the upper portion of the note, with the denomination 'FIVE SHILLINGS' rendered centrally in large characters beneath, flanked by serial numbers at left and right. A multilingual denomination panel in Arabic and Gujarati script runs across the centre, with a dark cartouche bearing the numeral '5' at right, and three manuscript signatures of the Board members appear above the date and place of issue at lower centre.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in red-brown on a light ground and centres on a large oval vignette of a walking lion in profile against a mountain landscape, enclosed within an elaborate guilloche border. Numerals '5' appear in each of the four corners, and two horizontal banner panels at the top and bottom each bear the inscription 'FIVE SHILLINGS' in bold letterpress. The overall design is framed by intricate lathe-work rosette patterns in the four quadrants.
