South Africa's Crown-sized five shillings series ran from 1947 through 1952, struck in .500 silver after the country had already debased from the .800 standard used before the war. The 1951 issue is among the lower-mintage dates in the postwar run, with production figures well below the 1947 and 1948 issues that absorbed initial demand.
George VI died in February 1952, making 1951 the penultimate year of his effigy on South African coinage.
