Obverse description Uncrowned and undraped effigy of King George VI facing left, modelled by Thomas Humphrey Paget, whose initials HP appear below the truncation. The peripheral legend reads GEORGIVS VI REX IMPERATOR, disposed around the upper arc, with a toothed border encircling the entire obverse field.

Reverse description A naturalistic depiction of a springbok in full leap to the right, set against a stylised rocky landscape background, the design executed by Coert Laurens Steynberg whose initials CLS appear in the lower right field. The bilingual legend SOUTH AFRICA · 1947 · SUID-AFRIKA arcs across the upper periphery, while the denomination 5 SHILLINGS is inscribed along the lower arc, flanked on either side by decorative six-pointed star ornaments. A toothed border frames the entire reverse.
