For Uganda specifically, the timing coincided with government efforts to promote groundnut and cotton production as foreign exchange earners — the coin was as much a policy statement as a circulation piece.

At 28 grams in copper-nickel, this is a substantial piece for a five-shilling denomination, and examples that actually circulated are noticeably worn on the high points of the agricultural imagery.
