Jamaica's first banknotes were issued under the Bank of Jamaica Act of 1960, and this 5 Shillings belongs to that inaugural series — printed before independence, still denominated in the colonial shilling structure that would be replaced by the Jamaican dollar in 1969. De La Rue produced the series in London, which was standard practice for newly established Caribbean central banks lacking domestic printing infrastructure.
The Latin motto variant (Pick 49) is distinguished from the earlier colonial government issues by the issuing authority itself — a central bank rather than the Crown Agents.
