South Africa's switch to .500 fine silver for this denomination — down from the .800 standard used before 1923 — reflected post-war metal economics and a treasury reluctant to commit fine silver to circulation coinage. The 1953 issue marked the first year of Elizabeth II's effigy on South African coinage, coinciding with her coronation year, though the Union's days as a Commonwealth realm were already numbered.
South Africa became a republic in 1961, ending the series abruptly. The 1959 date is the final issue.
