| Beschrijving keerzijde | The crowned coat of arms of Southern Rhodesia occupies the centre of the field, surmounted by a royal crown above the shield. The shield is quartered, depicting a lion passant and thistles in the upper quarters and a pick and Zimbabwe bird motifs in the lower quarter, with supporting devices to either side. This coin presents one of numismatics' great ironies: struck in 1937 bearing Edward VIII's title, yet he had abdicated in December 1936 — before a single coin bearing his effigy was released for general circulation anywhere in the empire. Southern Rhodesia was among the territories that had prepared dies and approved designs, leaving the colonial administration to navigate the awkward bureaucratic aftermath. The "King Emperor" title itself became obsolete the moment George VI declined to pursue the Imperial title in the same form.
No Edward VIII coinage for Southern Rhodesia ever circulated. What exists does so entirely outside normal issue.
