| 裏面の説明 | The South African coat of arms occupies the central field, surmounted by a royal crown and displaying the four quartered shield with supporters. The date 1937 is divided to either side of the shield in the mid-field. The bilingual legend SOUTH AFRICA and ZUID AFRIKA arcs around the upper periphery, while the denomination numeral 5 appears at the base flanked by decorative rosette stops. The entire design is enclosed within a finely beaded inner border and milled outer rim. |

Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before his coronation ever took place, which meant no coins bearing his effigy entered circulation in South Africa or anywhere else in the Empire. This piece was struck in 1937 as a medallic souvenir — almost certainly produced privately or semi-officially to capitalize on the abdication's notoriety — using brass rather than the silver of a genuine crown. The gilding is a later enhancement, applied to improve saleability rather than for any official purpose.
