Additional information

Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936 before a single circulation coin bearing his effigy was issued by any Commonwealth territory. South Africa had already prepared dies, and rather than waste the blanks, the Pretoria Mint struck a small number of copper 5 Shilling pieces in 1937 using Edward's obverse — making this one of the only tangible coinages to bear his name under a reign that officially produced nothing.
