Kenya's 2018 coinage series was issued under a directive from President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration mandating the removal of colonial-era portraits from circulating currency — a policy shift that replaced the long-running image of founding president Jomo Kenyatta with indigenous wildlife and national symbols. The 5 shilling denomination had carried a portrait of Jomo Kenyatta since independence-era issues, making the 2018 redesign a deliberate break from that numismatic tradition.
KM#46 superseded KM#30, which had circulated for decades in a simpler nickel-plated steel format before the bimetallic construction was adopted.
