Obverse description Intaglio portrait of Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda in suit and tie at left, with a central vignette of two fishermen casting a net from a wooden boat on a calm lake, rocky shoreline visible in the background. A multicolour guilloche oval underprint carries the promise-to-pay text at centre, with denomination numerals '5/-' repeated in the upper and lower corners. Two manuscript signatures of the Governor and General Manager appear at lower right, with the issuing authority legend above.

Reverse description Central intaglio vignette of the Malawi coat of arms eagle with wings fully spread, standing above wavy lines representing water, set against a radiating sunburst guilloche pattern. A large plain oval watermark space occupies the left portion of the note, flanked by intricate lathe-work borders. The denomination '5/-' appears in the upper corners and the bank name is printed at upper centre.
