Somalia's shilling was under severe pressure through the mid-1980s, with inflation and a collapsing agricultural economy steadily eroding purchasing power. By the time this series was in active circulation, the 5-shilling denomination had become genuinely marginal for everyday transactions — yet the note continued to be issued across the full span of the series dates rather than being retired early, as might have been expected.
Thomas De La Rue's involvement kept production quality consistent, but the watermark security was relatively light for the period, reflecting the denomination's low face value rather than any lapse in specification.
