The 1978 series marked a transitional moment in Israeli currency design: the country was still issuing notes denominated in the old Lira-era sheqel spelling before the 1980 monetary reform swept in the New Sheqel. Canadian Bank Note Company had been supplying Israeli currency since the early 1970s, and the Ottawa connection is sometimes overlooked by collectors who assume all Israeli notes of this period were printed domestically.
Paul Kor and Adrian Senger were both senior engravers at CBN during a period when the company's intaglio work was among the finest being produced in North America. The watermark security on this issue is comparatively modest by later Israeli standards — the 1980 reform brought substantially upgraded anti-counterfeiting measures.
