The Shakya republic — a small oligarchic janapada in the Terai foothills of what is now southern Nepal — is better known today as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama than as a monetary authority. These punch-marked pieces predate Buddhist canonical chronology and were likely struck under the very political administration into which Gautama was born, possibly within a generation of his birth around 563 BC.
The weight standard traces to the Puranic rati seed system, with the shana unit a recognized denomination within the broader kahapana tradition circulating across the Gangetic plain.
