The šalomai was a short-lived Lithuanian commemorative denomination — not a circulating banknote at all, but a collector issue released by the Bank of Lithuania as part of its annual numismatic program. The hybrid substrate, unusual for a small Baltic issuer at that time, reflects the influence of De La Rue's polymer composite technology being piloted across several central banks in the early 2000s.
The denomination name itself derives from a traditional Lithuanian wind instrument, part of a broader series celebrating national folk culture. These were sold directly to collectors and never released through the banking system.
