The obverse displays multi-line Arabic calligraphic legend in the field, recording the royal titulature and mint formula of Shah Abbas II of Safavid Persia, struck at Tabriz in AH 1069. A small circular VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) counterstamp is applied prominently in the central field, punched over the original coin surface as an authorization mark for circulation in Ceylon. The host coin flan is irregular and shows the characteristic crudeness of hammered Safavid silver, with a chipped and uneven edge. |

The reverse is entirely occupied by the Shiite Kalima rendered in flowing Nasta'liq-style Arabic calligraphy across the full coin field, naming the Islamic profession of faith and the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shia Islam. The inscription fills the flan in dense, overlapping script characteristic of Safavid religious coinage. The edge is irregularly chipped, consistent with a large hammered silver host coin. No counterstamp is present on this face. |
