A circular Tibetan legend surrounds the effigy, running along both sides of the field. Bhutan's 1966 gold coinage was issued to mark the ascension of Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, the third Druk Gyalpo, who had actually taken the throne in 1952 — making this a commemorative struck some fourteen years after the fact. The delay reflects Bhutan's extreme institutional isolation during that period; the country had no formal mint infrastructure and relied on foreign facilities to produce struck coinage at all.
The Royal Mint in London produced this issue. Bhutan would not begin meaningful domestic monetary modernization until the early 1970s.
