Additional information

The BSP modernized its coin series starting in 2017 partly in response to chronic shortages of low-denomination coins in rural and provincial circulation — a persistent problem in the Philippine monetary system driven by hoarding, loss, and the sheer geographic difficulty of distributing coinage across over 7,000 islands. The switch to nickel-plated steel from the earlier aluminum composition improved durability without significantly affecting vending machine compatibility, which had been a sticking point with earlier reformulations.
