Tanumafili II held the position of O le Ao o le Malo — head of state — from Samoan independence in 1962 until his death in 2007, making him the longest-serving head of state in the world at the time of his passing. His portrait appeared on Samoan coinage across decades of different monetary arrangements, surviving the country's 2008 shift from the tālā's earlier peg history into the modern float era. Coins bearing his effigy continued circulating after his death until successor designs were introduced.
