| Obverse description | Central round hole flanked by the denomination inscribed in Kanji characters: '五' (five) to the right and '錢' (sen) to the left. The Imperial chrysanthemum mon — the sixteen-petalled emblem of the Japanese Imperial House — appears prominently above the central hole. The lower portion of the field is adorned with a finely rendered spray of paulownia (kiri) foliage, with stylized leaves and berries in low relief. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner border and a plain outer rim. |
