Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of Hassanal Bolkiah's accession in 1967, this series replaced the long-running second portrait coinage that had circulated since the 1990s. Brunei's currency has been interchangeable at par with the Singapore dollar since the 1967 Currency Interchangeability Agreement — one of the few bilateral monetary arrangements of its kind still fully operational today.
