Indonesia's aluminium small-denomination coinage of the early 1960s was struck during a period of severe fiscal strain under Sukarno's Guided Democracy, when chronic budget deficits and aggressive money-printing were already eroding the rupiah's purchasing power. By the mid-1960s, inflation had made coins of this value functionally worthless in daily trade. Most were either hoarded as metal or simply abandoned, which ironically accounts for the high-grade survivors seen today — not careful preservation, but economic collapse rendering them unspendable before they could wear.
