| 裏面の説明 | Two curved rice stalks with leaves and grain clusters encircle the central round hole, sweeping gracefully around the perforation in a wreath-like arrangement. The legend INDONESIA and the date appear along the upper periphery, while the denomination numeral 5 and the word SEN are displayed in bold relief at the lower portion of the field. The rice motif is a symbol of national prosperity and agricultural identity, rendered in fine detail against a plain field. |

Indonesia's earliest post-independence coinage was issued under acute fiscal pressure — the new republic had inherited a shattered economy and was still fighting Dutch attempts to reassert colonial control through 1949. These aluminum 5 sen pieces were among the first coins struck under Bank Indonesia's authority after the transfer of sovereignty, physically displacing the Netherlands Indies issues that had circulated through the occupation years and the independence struggle.
Aluminum was chosen by necessity, not preference. Base metal reserves were severely constrained in the early 1950s.
