San Marino's 1995 gold issue commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, an organization the republic joined in 1992 — remarkably late given its status as one of Europe's oldest and smallest sovereign states. San Marino had long maintained observer status while resisting full membership, partly due to its tradition of strict neutrality and its unusual constitutional arrangement of two Captains Regent sharing executive power in six-month rotations since the thirteenth century.

Struck to 22-karat standard, production was tightly limited, as with most San Marinese commemorative gold of the period.
