The Sovereign Military Order of Malta occupies a peculiar position in numismatics: a sovereign issuing authority without a territorial state, recognized by over a hundred nations yet governing no land beyond its Rome headquarters. Its coinage program, launched formally in 1961, was never intended for circulation — these are juridical curiosities as much as coins, issued under the Order's claimed sovereignty dating to its 1113 papal recognition. The Angelo series takes its name from the gold scudo of the Knights' Hospitaller period, a deliberate historical callback to the Order's Maltese and Rhodian monetary issues.
Fr#12 is among the scarcer collector issues of the series, with mintages kept deliberately low across the production window.
