Schwyz was among the smallest and most conservative of the Swiss cantons, and its late-eighteenth-century silver issues were produced in very limited quantities for a population that conducted most local exchange through barter or foreign coin. The 1787 date places this piece just two years before the French Revolution began destabilizing the Confederation's southern neighbors — within a decade, Napoleonic reorganization would dissolve cantonal monetary independence entirely under the Helvetic Republic of 1798.
The HMZ 2#801b designation distinguishes this from closely related die varieties in the series; Divo/Tob cataloguing confirms it as a documented subtype rather than a die accident.
