Austria's postwar hyperinflation had destroyed the krone so thoroughly that by 1924 the country required a League of Nations bailout and an entirely new currency to function. This 5 Schilling note belongs to the stabilization series issued under that reconstructed monetary framework, with the Nationalbank itself operating the presses in Vienna — an unusual degree of end-to-end domestic production for the period.
Rudolf Junk and Karl Sterrer were both well-regarded figures in Viennese applied arts, and Zenziger's engraving work on this series is considered among the finer intaglio output from the interwar Austrian press.
